Sharp received from Qualcomm $ 60 million investment

Japan's Sharp today announced the receipt of an investment of $ 60 million from the U.S. Qualcomm. The statement said that the two companies are working to bring the mass production of a new generation of fuel-efficient and high-performance displays for mobile devices.

Qualcomm through its subsidiary Pixtronix start interacting with Sharp for the release of the displays based on the technology of MEMS (microelectromechanical systems), in which the screen pixels are based on tiny mechanical zatvorkah, which open and close certain colors on the display. Potentially, this technology allows you to create faster displays, capable of quickly change the picture without moire and loss in quality. At the same time, the new technology promises to be a cost-effective, even though today the mass production of MEMS is not yet established.

"We are moving toward commercialization," - says Sharp spokeswoman Miyuki Nakayama. According to her, the two companies are still in the research phase and has not yet announced a release date versions of commercial displays.

First became aware of the transaction in December of last year, when Qualcomm has agreed to invest in Sharp $ 120 million in two tranches, the first of which was paid in March, while the second was to be paid in April and May, but due to the fact that Sharp does not reach the specified financial ratios, has been postponed until June.

As described in Qualcomm, compared to LCD technology enables MEMS to respond more quickly to changes in the images and do not require the use of filters, which reduces enegopotreblenie for work. A variation of this technology under the brand name Mirasol, Qualcomm develops its own forces.
